Quarterback Jaylen Johnson showcased a stellar performance, securing two rushing touchdowns and delivering three more through the air, propelling Thomas County Central to a decisive 49-28 triumph over Woodward Academy in the Class 6A championship game held on Tuesday.

Finishing the season with an impeccable record of 15-0, the Yellow Jackets achieved an undefeated status for only the second time in the school’s history. Under the leadership of coach Jason Rogers, who assumed the role in 2022, the team has thrived with a remarkable 27-1 record. This victory marked the school’s sixth state championship, breaking a championship drought since their last five titles in a span of six years from 1992 to 1997, under the guidance of legendary coach Ed Pilcher.
Quarterback Jaylen Johnson demonstrated his versatility by completing 6 of 8 passes for 135 yards and rushing 12 times for an additional 105 yards. Teammate Trey Brenton contributed significantly, carrying the ball 23 times for 154 yards and securing two touchdowns. Tre’von Pringle led the receiving efforts with four receptions for 78 yards and one touchdown. Notable defensive contributions came from Dee Reddick (10 tackles, one sack), Tywon Christopher (seven tackles, three breakups), Caleb Anderson (seven tackles, two sacks), and Cameron Brooks (three sacks).
Woodward Academy, with a record of 12-3, was led by quarterback Landon Walker, who completed 22 of 48 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns. Ben Grice stood out with nine catches for 137 yards and one touchdown, while Lucas Farrington added seven receptions for 85 yards and a score. Amari Irvin led the defensive efforts with 11 tackles. The game marked Woodward Academy’s return to the final since their last championship victory in 1980.
Thomas County Central dominated the early stages of the game, amassing 28 points. The scoring plays included Trey Benton’s 20-yard run, a 20-yard pass from Johnson to Malachi Thomas, and Johnson’s own runs of 1 and 31 yards. Despite Woodward’s efforts to narrow the gap with a 1-yard run by Landon Walker before halftime, Thomas County Central maintained control. The Yellow Jackets responded to each of Woodward’s attempts, securing the victory with a well-rounded performance, ultimately securing the Class 6A championship.
