The aircraft was diverted to Newfoundland and Labrador, a Canadian Province, on Sunday, with the airline confirming a mechanical issue as the cause. Another passenger recounted that during the flight, the plane took a “sharp turn,” and the pilot informed them of a problem with the de-icer for one of the engines, emphasizing the potential damage if not addressed.

Due to the unexpected landing, passengers found themselves in unconventional accommodations. “They put us in some military barracks,” said Santoro. “It honestly felt like a hotel. It wasn’t too bad. We had soap, water, everything.”

Challenges persisted as adverse weather and runway conditions at Goose Bay Airport impacted crew duty times, leading to the suspension of operations, as per Delta’s explanation.

In response, Delta arranged for an additional aircraft to ensure passengers reached Detroit Metro Airport by Monday.

Santoro’s father expressed joy at the family being reunited during the holiday season, stating, “We can’t believe it’s real. He’s actually home after four days of travel.”

However, some passengers continue to face difficulties retrieving their baggage, mistakenly placed on a different flight.
