Darts is a type of sports game in which participants throw darts at a round target divided into sectors. There are strict rules and standards in darts.

The headquarters of the World Darts Federation, established in 1976, is located in the Swiss city of Lischtal. Currently, the WDF includes countries from six continents: Asia, Australia, Africa, Europe, and South, and North America.

The history of the emergence and development of darts Darts, according to various sources, has been about three hundred years. At first, this game was a simple entertainment for the soldiers of the British army, but over time it has become the favorite sport of hundreds of thousands of darters around the world. British archers got used to throwing darts at a tree or at the bottom of a beer barrel in between mugs of beer back in the Middle Ages. The invented game made it possible to arrange competitions both on the street and indoors. Arrows were shortened and used as darts. Determining the winner was hampered by the lack of rules, so the proposal of carpenter Brian Gamlin from Lankshire to divide the target into sectors was received with enthusiasm. Brian came up with the idea, but the more enterprising Thomas William Buckley patented it.

Therefore, he is considered the creator of the first rules and markings of the target into twenty sectors, for which points were awarded. It was at the end of the nineteenth century, and at the beginning of the twentieth-century darts were banned as a game of chance. The owner of the hotel Jim Garside and the blacksmith William Anakin from the city of Leeds took up the cause of the release of their favorite game from the ban. They proved that throwing darts in sectors requires a certain skill and skill, and not the luck and luck of the players. Darts was justified, and in 1927 the first official tournament took place in London (News of the World Individual Darts Championship). By the middle of the twentieth century, by the decision of the National Association (1954), the game acquires the status of a sport, competitions are held first in England, then in other countries.

Rules of the game of darts

The standard of the game is a target number from one to twenty sectors with an apple (center) in the middle, surrounded by a green or red ring. A hit with a dart in the center gives the player 50 points, and in a green (red) circle – 25 points. Hitting the narrow outer circle of the target doubles the sector score. Points are calculated based on the results of three throws of each dartsman. The highest possible score is 180.

In accordance with the rules, men and women can become participants in tournaments with their own set of standard darts. Players who violate the rules are disqualified for the duration of the current competition.

The target is usually made from pressed agave (sisal) fibers. A special wire divides it into sectors from one to twenty. Sisal targets differ in the shape of the wire and are:

  • conventional (high percentage of rebound darts, but inexpensive in price);
  • trihedral (a small percentage of the rebound of the darts, their slipping into the sector adjacent to the separating wire);
  • the thinnest (the minimum percentage of rebound darts, such targets are used in professional tournaments).

A darts target has its own standards. So, the inner width of tribles and doubles (rings) corresponds to 8 mm, the diameter of the bullseye is 12.7 mm, the inner diameter of the central outer ring is 31.8 mm, and the distance is 170 mm, respectively, from the outer side of the doubles ring to the center of the target, and the tribles are 107 mm. The target should be 451 mm in diameter (+, – 10 mm), and the thickness of the special wire should be 1.4-1.6 mm. The target must be positioned so that the bullseye is at a level of 1 m 73 cm from the floor, and the distance of the throw line to the target is 2 m 37 cm. The twentieth sector is located strictly above.
