Sunshine Raises Doubts About Daily Sunscreen Use

When we step outside on a clear day, the Sunscreen sun’s ultraviolet light triggers the body to produce endorphins that reduce stress and improve mood. UV rays also prompt our skin to produce vitamin D. Additionally, looking up at the morning sun helps our bodies recognize daytime and adjust our sleep-wake cycle accordingly.

These benefits might tempt some people to skip sunscreen—dermatologists report that patients often worry they’ll miss out on these advantages.

“This is one of the biggest obstacles in people’s minds: the idea they shouldn’t use sunscreen for fear they won’t get vitamin D,” said Dr. Steven Q. Wang, director of dermatologic oncology and dermatology at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach, Calif.

Recent surveys reflect this concern. In one poll of over 1,000 adults in the United States, 11 percent believed wearing sunscreen was more harmful than direct sun exposure. In another survey, 15 percent thought sun exposure was the only way to get vitamin D.
