Understanding Vaginal Yeast Infections

Candidiasis, commonly known as a vaginal yeast infection, is a result of an overgrowth of Candida, a type of yeast, in the vaginal area. Dr. Pratibha Singhal, Director at the Department of Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, highlights that certain factors can disturb the balance, leading to an infection. Symptoms often include itching, burning sensation during urination, thick white discharge resembling cottage cheese, and redness and swelling of the vulva.

Causes of Vaginal Yeast Infections
Several factors contribute to the overgrowth of the fungus Candida albicans:

Antibiotics: Their use can disrupt the body’s bacterial balance, allowing Candida to proliferate.

Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormones during pregnancy, menstruation, or use of hormonal contraceptives can create a conducive environment for yeast overgrowth.

Weakened immune system: Conditions or medications that weaken the immune system, such as HIV or corticosteroids, increase the risk of yeast infection.

Diabetes: Uncontrolled diabetes can elevate blood sugar levels, providing a favorable environment for yeast growth.

Diet: A diet high in sugar and refined carbohydrates can also promote the growth of Candida.

Tight clothing: Wearing non-breathable, tight clothes, especially underwear, can create a warm, moist environment that encourages yeast growth.

Personal hygiene products: Use of harsh soaps, vaginal douches, or scented feminine products can disrupt the natural vaginal balance, leading to an infection.

Evaluating the Efficacy of Yogurt for Yeast Infection
While yogurt is often recommended as a home remedy for yeast infections due to its probiotic content, particularly Lactobacillus acidophilus, it’s essential to understand how it can help:

Probiotics: Yogurt contains live cultures of beneficial bacteria that can maintain the vaginal microorganism balance by inhibiting the overgrowth of harmful yeast like Candida.

Restoring balance: Factors like antibiotics or hormonal changes can disrupt the natural balance of vaginal flora, and applying yogurt with live cultures topically or including it in the diet may help restore this balance.

However, it’s crucial to exercise caution and not experiment with home remedies without complete awareness. Depending on the severity of the issue, it’s advisable to consult a gynecologist for antifungal creams, ointments, or oral medications specifically designed to treat yeast infections.
