Bob Moore, the visionary founder of Bob’s Red Mill and an iconic figure in the natural foods industry, peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the age of 94. His indomitable spirit, commitment to whole grains, tireless work ethic (remaining a Board Member of Bob’s Red Mill until his passing), and remarkable generosity, notably in establishing the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) on his 81st birthday, have left an enduring impact.
Bob Moore
A lifelong entrepreneur, Moore’s journey in promoting healthy foods and milling whole grains began alongside parenthood, culminating in the founding of Bob’s Red Mill in 1978. Initially catering to the local community in Portland, Oregon, the company swiftly transformed into a global natural foods powerhouse, offering over 200 products across 70 countries. The establishment of the ESOP in 2010 secured the company’s legacy by transferring ownership to the dedicated individuals who contributed to its growth. Today, over 700 employee owners proudly carry forward Bob’s vision.
Bob’s Red Mill CEO Trey Winthrop expressed, “Bob’s legacy will live on forever in all of us who had the opportunity to work with him and is infused into the Bob’s Red Mill brand.” Winthrop emphasized the responsibility and motivation felt by the team to uphold Moore’s dedication to unprocessed foods, high-quality ingredients, and generosity to employee owners and educational organizations focusing on nutritional health.
In the past decade, Moore and his late wife, Charlee, who passed away in 2018, sought to inspire future generations through substantial financial contributions to Oregon universities. Their benevolence earned them the title of honorary Beavers at Oregon State University, where they played a pivotal role in establishing the Moore Family Center for Whole Grain Foods, Nutrition, and Preventive Health. Their generosity extended to the establishment of the Bob and Charlee Moore Institute for Nutrition & Wellness at Oregon Health & Science University, along with numerous research programs throughout the state.
Survived by his three sons, Ken, Bob Jr., and David, along with their respective families, Moore leaves behind a profound legacy. His impact will be keenly felt and fondly remembered by his family, the extended Bob’s Red Mill family, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him during his illustrious life. Plans for a celebration of life service are underway, with details to be announced. Meanwhile, friends and admirers are encouraged to visit the Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store in Milwaukie, Oregon, to share their memories in honor of this visionary entrepreneur.
