Cornerback Kyler Gordon experienced the brunt of the questionable officiating when his facemask became dislodged, hanging loosely from his helmet. In a sensible response to the compromised safety of wearing the helmet, Gordon removed it after the play concluded. However, instead of acknowledging a player’s decision to address a faulty piece of equipment, Gordon was penalized for taunting (?!) merely for taking off his helmet.

On the sidelines, Gordon attempted to demonstrate to the referees that his helmet was temporarily broken, but his efforts proved futile. According to The Athletic’s Kevin Fishbain, this apparent attempt to showcase the equipment malfunction may have shifted the penalty from simply removing the helmet to the eventual taunting call.

Troy Aikman, commenting on the situation, expressed bewilderment, stating, “If you can go in and replay something, I guess that would be the time to do it.”

The sequence of events drew widespread incredulity, as penalizing a player for taunting while attempting to address a safety concern with malfunctioning equipment seemed entirely illogical. Such decisions by sports officials often attract criticism from fans and analysts alike, as they appear disconnected from the practicalities of the game. In this case, the call left NFL fans in disagreement with the officiating crew’s decision.
