Health officials highlight Mpox as a rare disease with the potential for hospitalization and fatality, affecting anyone. In 2022, the state reported just over 400 cases, with 43% in Davidson County and 34% in Shelby County. While there was a significant reduction in cases late in 2022, the numbers surged again in October and November 2023, with about five cases reported throughout most of the year.

To address this resurgence, Nashville Health is organizing a vaccination event at the Lentz Public Health Center on Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The disease primarily spreads through close physical contact, and certain populations, such as men with close contact with other men, are more affected. Groups at heightened risk for severe outcomes include individuals with weakened immune systems, elderly Tennesseans, and pregnant individuals.

Residents experiencing Mpox-like symptoms are urged to contact their healthcare provider. Additionally, with National Influenza Vaccination Week underway, health officials emphasize the importance of getting a flu vaccine, as there is still time for vaccination.
