Yadav noted that the idea of ‘National Postal Worker Day’ originated in the USA in 1997 in Seattle, Washington, to honor the dedication of postal workers. He pointed out that the role of postal workers has significantly transformed over the years. In addition to traditional mail and parcels, postmen now deliver vital documents such as Aadhaar cards, passports, PAN cards, voter IDs, driving licenses, bank checkbooks, and ATM cards. They also deliver prasad from temples, medicines, and Rakhis during Raksha Bandhan.

In the Varanasi region alone, over two thousand postmen serve citizens daily, delivering approximately 8.5 lakh speed post and registered letters and 15 lakh ordinary letters each month. To foster economic and social inclusion in rural areas, postmen also function as mobile ATMs and provide services related to Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), Jan Suraksha schemes, Aadhaar, Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, e-Shram Cards, vehicle insurance, and Digital Life Certificates.

Furthermore, Yadav highlighted the role of postal workers in enrolling children under five for Aadhaar and updating mobile numbers at doorsteps, which is particularly beneficial in rural areas. Through the Child Enrolment Lite Client (CELC), more than 20,000 Aadhaar enrolments and updates are processed monthly. Additionally, about 40,000 people withdraw cash through the Aadhaar Enabled Payment System each month.

Yadav’s remarks underscore the expanding responsibilities and importance of postal workers in modern society, highlighting their role in facilitating essential services and fostering connectivity between the government and the public.
