“Introducing the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e: A Closer Look at America’s Upcoming Plug-In Hybrid SUV”

It’s not often that we provide a first glimpse of a vehicle we’ve already taken for a spin—after all, isn’t the drive itself the initial introduction? However, in this unique scenario, we had the opportunity to test drive the Mercedes-Benz GLC300e plug-in hybrid in Europe last year, unaware of its fate in the American market. Now, it’s confirmed: the gas-electric GLC-Class is making its way stateside, albeit with a slight name change to GLC350e. Mechanically, it remains identical to its European counterpart.

To recap, the GLC350e inherits the GLC300e’s turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 gas engine, complemented by a 134-hp, 325-lb-ft electric motor powered by a 24.8-kWh battery pack. The combined output reaches an impressive 313 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes boasts a remarkable EV-only driving range of up to 81 miles, although this figure is derived from the optimistic European WLTP test cycle. A more realistic estimate, based on EPA standards, places the range in the mid-60-mile range, still positioning the GLC350e as one of the more long-range plug-in hybrid SUVs available.

Furthermore, the sizable battery can be swiftly replenished using a 60-kW DC fast charger in as little as 30 minutes. Standard features include “Mercedes me Charge,” which seamlessly integrates with major public charging networks, ensuring convenient access to over 100,000 chargers across the country.

Similar to its European counterpart, the GLC350e offers hybrid, EV-only, and off-road driving modes, with electric power available in the latter two modes. While power delivery remains robust, it’s worth noting that the GLC350e is expected to weigh nearly 1,000 pounds more than its gas-powered counterparts. However, this extra weight comes with a range of standard features, including heated front seats, power-opening tailgate, navigation, dual-zone automatic climate control, and advanced safety technologies.

Trim options range from Standard to Exclusive, offering additional amenities such as a Burmester audio system, enhanced safety features, and upscale ambient lighting. The top-tier Pinnacle trim adds premium features like streaming music and video capabilities, a head-up display, and upgraded interior finishes.

Although final pricing and efficiency ratings are yet to be disclosed, the GLC350e is poised to rival other plug-in hybrid SUVs like the Volvo XC60 T8 PHEV and Lexus RX450h+, offering superior EV-only range and DC fast charging capabilities. With its blend of performance, efficiency, and advanced technology, the Mercedes-Benz GLC350e promises to be a compelling choice in the burgeoning plug-in hybrid SUV market.
