Cancer comes in various forms, Breast Cancer depending on the affected body part, such as skin, blood, liver, lung, and more. However, each of these types has further classifications. For instance, breast cancer, as highlighted by Cancer Research UK, is among the most prevalent cancers globally, with 11 distinct types and related conditions. Among these is the rare and aggressive Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC). To shed light on this specific type, OnlyMyHealth interviewed Dr. Rohan Khandelwal, Lead Consultant in Oncology & Head of Breast Centre at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram.
Understanding Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Dr. Khandelwal describes IBC as the most aggressive form, characterized by swelling of the breast skin, resembling an orange peel, accompanied by a firm lump within the breast. When this skin alteration encompasses over one-third of the breast, it is identified as inflammatory breast cancer.
According to Cancer Research UK, IBC progresses rapidly compared to other types and accounts for less than 5% of all breast cancer cases. Dr. Khandelwal emphasizes its aggressive nature, rapid growth, and potential to metastasize to other organs.
Identifying Inflammatory Breast Cancer
Often, IBC symptoms are mistaken for other conditions or vice versa. Dr. Khandelwal warns that while similar rashes may result from skin conditions like eczema or excessive sweating, they typically resolve with time or treatment. Persistent rash or swelling suggests IBC.
Differentiating IBC from other breast cancers involves a biopsy of the lump or skin lesions, alongside a full-body scan to assess metastasis, Dr. Khandelwal explains.
Treatment Approach
In treating IBC, chemotherapy precedes surgery to shrink tumors and restore affected breast tissue, Dr. Khandelwal advises. Cancer Research UK notes treatment decisions are influenced by factors like receptor status and overall health.
Awareness Matters
Despite its rarity, awareness of IBC is crucial, underscoring the need for vigilance and knowledge. Prompt consultation with healthcare professionals is essential if IBC is suspected, emphasizing the importance of informed discussions regarding treatment options.
