The Batman Concept Art Reveals Penguin Almost Wore a Mustard Yellow Suit

Adam Brockbank unveils yet another piece of unused The Batman concept art, which sees Colin Farrell’s Penguin sport a mustard-yellow suit.

Concept art for The Batman reveals a different look for the Penguin, which sees Colin Farrell with much less makeup and sporting a mustard yellow suit. Matt Reeves’s latest take on the titular DC Comics character was released back in March and generated a lot of enthusiasm thanks to its darker tone. As a detective, noir thriller, the film hearkens back to Batman: The Animated Series, the Arkham video games, and comics like Batman: Year One in a way fans haven’t seen before. The Batman follows Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne in his second year as “Vengeance” as he tracks down a mysterious serial killer in the Riddler (Paul Dano). The cast also includes Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright’s Lieutenant James Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, and Farrell’s Penguin.

Fans of the comics are familiar with the character of Oswald “Oz” Cobblepot, known as the Penguin, one of the most enduring members of Batman’s rogues’ gallery. The Gotham City mobster and owner of the Iceberg Lounge—who is usually depicted as a short, fat man with a long nose—is often seen wearing a tuxedo, monocle, and carrying a variety of weaponized umbrellas. While previous live-action iterations of the Penguin, most notably Danny Devito’s in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns (1992), have leaned into exaggeration, Farrell’s performance in The Batman is a grounded one—which sees him wear a bodysuit, don hours’ worth of prosthetic makeup, and become virtually unrecognizable. As various artists release concept art for The Batman, it’s become evident the Penguin’s look certainly wasn’t established overnight.

The release of other concept art online and via The Art of The Batman has implied that, originally, Farrell might have played a less deformed, slimmer version of his character. Leading up to the release of The Batman, Farrell and Reeves revealed their Penguin takes emotional inspiration from John Cazale’s Fredo in The Godfather, and his look could have been a reflection of that. However, this departure from an “ugly” version of the character would’ve likely proven less faithful. Therefore, The Batman takes the Hollywood trend of caking attractive, bankable stars in makeup to the next level.

The yellow-suited image drawn by Brockbank does a good job of conveying the feeling of the same eccentric foot soldier of Carmine Falcone, but it’s entirely different than what appeared on screen. Farrell’s character in The Batman is a standout, and his performance is facilitated by a look that clearly took a long time to get right. Now, the Penguin is set to appear next in an HBO Max spinoff which will chart his rise to power ala Tony Montana in Scarface. When he’s seen next on the big screen, he’ll be a force to be reckoned with who has no reservations about wearing a mustard yellow suit.
