Behind-the-scenes images from the set of The Batman show Matt Reeves directing Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader. Ben Affleck was famously supposed to write and direct The Batman, starring his DCEU version of Bruce Wayne/Batman but dropped out due to a multitude of reasons. Writer/director Reeves (War for the Planet of the Apes) was then brought on for the reboot exploring the early years of Pattinson’s Dark Knight.

Inspired by classic Batman comics like Year One and The Long HalloweenThe Batman will see its eponymous character come into his own as the “World’s Greatest Detective” while combating the Riddler (Paul Dano). The Riddler hasn’t appeared on the big screen since 1995’s Batman Forever, and Dano’s serial killer will be a lot darker than Jim Carrey’s disgruntled employee. Pattinson and Dano have an impressive supporting cast that boasts the likes of Jeffrey Wright’s Commissioner Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth, John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, Zoë Kravitz’s Catwoman, and Colin Farrell’s Penguin. On top of that, The Batman is rumored to tease other iconic villains like Two-Face and, as always, the Joker.

Two BTS images courtesy of Warner Bros. show Reeves directing Pattinson on the set of The Batman. One of the scenes the pair appear to be working on sees Batman showing up to the crime scene of Riddler’s victim, which was heavily featured in the film’s first trailer. The other sees him surrounded by police in what could be the station. Check them out below:

There’s a lot of pressure on Reeves and Pattinson to deliver on the third live-action Batman in a decade. While many were skeptical of the former Twilight headliner turned Indie star’s ability to wear the cape and cowl, The Batman’s trailers have silenced many of the naysayers. Reeves’ gritty, grounded take on Gotham City and, in turn, Batman is reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. However, even more than the latter, The Batman’s action sequences, lighting, cinematography, and visceral score feel like a comic come to life.

The Batman is also poised to explore a different side of the Wayne family, with teases hinting the Riddler not only knows Batman’s identity as Bruce Wayne but has knowledge of his family’s involvement in Gotham’s corruption. This depiction of the city/universe will inevitably set up Reeves’ trilogy, and the two HBO Max spinoffs focused on the Gotham Police Department and Penguin’s originsThe Batman is easily one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and thankfully, fans won’t have to wait much longer to see it in theaters on March 4.
