House Of The Dragon: 10 Main Cast Members And Their Highest-Rated Project, According To IMDb

HBO’s House of the Dragon has reinvigorated the Game of Thrones fandom, marking one of the channel’s biggest premieres yet. Promising to return the franchise to its roots, the new series has already become a cultural phenomenon among fans old and new, in part due to the fantastic performance from the cast, including Matt Smith and Milly Alcock.

As the prequel series further explores the fall of House Targaryen, a whole new cast of characters has risen to the forefront of the franchise. Each actor channels their inner Targaryen or other noble people for the show’s duration, but, outside the Game of Thrones universe, they have earned critical acclaim in other films and TV shows, based on IMDb.

10 Emily Carey: Wonder Woman (2017) – 7.4

Available On HBO Max

Emily Carey portrays the young version of Alicent Hightower, daughter of the King’s Hand and the second wife of King Viserys I. She becomes queen after her wedding to Viserys, bearing him a son whom many in the kingdom believe should be the next king and straining her relationship with Viserys’s daughter, Rhaenyra.

Though her career is still in its early stages, Carey has already appeared in a number of impressive projects, the most notable of which being 2017’s Wonder Woman film, starring Gal Gadot. Carey portrayed the 12-year-old version of Diana in the early scenes of the film, which holds an impressive 7.4 rating on IMDb, one of the DC Expanded Universe’s highest-rated projects.

9 Emma D’Arcy: Hanna (2019-2021) – 7.6

Available On Amazon Prime Video

Emma D’Arcy is set to take the lead in future episodes of House of the Dragon as the older version of Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, following the show’s decades-long time jump later in its first season. Though fans have yet to meet this version of the character, the change could spell more conflict in the later episodes and maybe build up to events in season 2.

While fans will soon see D’Arcy take over the role, many saw a glimpse of their performance in Hanna, the Amazon Prime reboot of the 2011 film of the same name. They appeared as CIA agent Sonia Richter in two episodes, who happens to be a double agent. The series has an overall score of 7.6 over the course of its three-season run, which came to an end last year.

8 Eve Best: The King’s Speech (2010) – 8.0

Available On Starz

Princess Rhaenys Targaryen is portrayed by Eve Best in the first season of House of the Dragon. Mockingly referred to as “The Queen Who Never Was,” Rhaenys was bypassed by her grandfather as his rightful heir, with the kingship instead given to Viserys.

With an average rating of 8.0 stars, The King’s Speech is Eve Best’s highest-rated film throughout her career. In the film, Best portrays real-life socialite Wallis Simpson, who had a hand in the abdication of King Edward VIII.

7 Olivia Cooke: Bates Motel (2013-2017) – 8.1

Available On Peacock

Olivia Cooke will portray the older depiction of Queen Alicent Hightower, following the show’s major time jump in an upcoming episode. As the reign of her husband, King Viserys, begins to wane, an adult Alicent will face a difficult dynamic with her one-time best friend and current heir to the throne, Princess Rhaenyra.

Cooke has become one of the rising stars, given excellent performances in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Thoroughbreds. With an 8.1 average user rating, Bates Motel is the highest-rated project in Cooke’s career. Playing Emma Decody, Cooke appeared in all but one episode of the highly-rated horror series.

6 Rhys Ifans: Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) – 8.3

Available On Starz

In House of the Dragon, Rhys Ifans portrays the King’s Hand, Otto Hightower, who advises King Viserys I throughout much of his reign. Like many advisors close to the king, Hightower has his own vendetta, aiming to have his descendants ascend to the throne of Westeros.

Ifans recently reprised one of his most memorable roles, returning as his The Amazing Spider-Man character Dr. Curt Conners, a.k.a. the Lizard, in the box office-smashing Spider-Man: No Way Home, which holds an 8.3 rating on IMDb. Though Ifans only returned in voice, the film also utilized archive footage of the actor for his brief physical appearance at the end of the film.

5 Milly Alcock: Upright (2019-Present) – 8.4

Available On Amazon Prime Video

Milly Alcock has become an all-out fan favorite in the early episodes of House of the Dragon for her portrayal of the young Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, King Viserys’s oldest child and heir to the throne. Though future episodes will recast the actress with Emma D’Arcy following a time jump, Alcock remains the heart of the show’s first few episodes.

Still early in her acting career, Alcock already has one very impressive project under her belt in the Australian comedy series Upright, in which she stars as Meg, the female lead of the show. With an 8.4 average user rating for the show’s first season, season 2 is currently in development, with an undisclosed release date.

4 Steve Touissant: Line Of Duty (2012-2021) – 8.7

Available On Peacock

Steve Touissant portrays Lord Corlys Velaryon, a close advisor to the king and the husband of Princess Rhaenys Targaryen, “the Queen Who Never Was.” Feeling cheated out of power by King Viserys, Lord Velaryon allies himself with Daemon Targaryen to consolidate power for himself and his house.

3 Graham McTavish: Rome (2005-2007) – 8.7

Available On HBO Max

Graham McTavish plays the character of Ser Harrold Westerling, a valiant knight in the Kingsguard who serves King Viserys I. The character has yet to make any major moves in the ever-ongoing “game of thrones,” but, given McTavish’s history in fantasy stories, will certainly be an important presence moving forward.

Though McTavish has appeared in many popular projects, including starring as the less likable Dwarf Dwalin in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy, his highest-regarded project is the historical drama Rome, which boasts an 8.7 average user rating for its two-season run. McTavish portrays the character of Urbo in two episodes of the show’s first season.

2 Matt Smith: The Crown (2016-Present) – 8.7

Matt Smith absolutely shines as Daemon Targaryen, the impulsive younger brother of King Viserys I. Believing himself to be his brother’s worthy successor, Daemon schemes to consolidate power in the kingdom so that he might be the next king after his brother’s death.

Though Smith has appeared in many acclaimed projects, none has been better received than The Crown, which chronicles the lives of the members of Britain’s royal family. Smith portrays Prince Philip in the first two seasons of the series, which holds an 8.7 rating on IMDb. The actor received an Emmy nomination for his work in season 2, and given the show’s depiction of royalty, Smith was easily a natural fit in his role as Daemon.
