A Hawkeye deleted scene arrives and introduces Kingpin properly in Echo’s flashback scene rather than the initial tease of the final cut. Vincent D’Onofrio first brought the iconic villain to life in Netflix’s Daredevil series, part of the streamer’s shows with loose connections to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Following the show’s cancellation, all of their futures remained up in the air until Kingpin made his return in Hawkeye as the ultimate main antagonist of the series.
Hawkeye takes primary inspiration from Matt Fraction and David Aja’s 2012 comic book run and sees the titular former Avenger have to put his family vacation on hold when superfan Kate Bishop inadvertently draws the target of the Tracksuit Mafia after donning the Ronin costume. Jeremy Renner returns to lead the cast as Clint Barton/Hawkeye alongside Hailee Steinfeld as Kate, Tony Dalton, Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Alaqua Cox and the MCU returns of Linda Cardellini, D’Onofrio and Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova. Hawkeye received largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike in its run and a spin-off centered on Cox’s Echo is currently in the works.
Nearly a month after the show came to an end on Disney+, Cloud Commentary has revealed a new Hawkeye deleted scene. The video comes from episode 3’s Echo flashback, this time properly introducing Kingpin as the character she refers to as uncle as he picks her up from her martial arts class in place of her father. Check out the deleted scene below:
The Hawkeye deleted scene is an interesting extension of the MCU for a number of reasons, most notably in it being the first of the Disney+ shows to have its excised material properly surface. Its predecessors, WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki, all had details shared of their deleted scenes by the creatives behind the titles, though all of the respective footage itself has gone unseen by the general public. Why Hawkeye of all the shows is the one to get the deleted scene treatment is currently unknown, though it could mark the start of Marvel releasing the unseen material from its other titles.
The other notable element of the Hawkeye deleted scene is its proper introduction of Kingpin in the series and return to the MCU with the flashback sequence. The original scene left the identity of the character a mystery, only showing a fairly large hand holding the young Echo’s cheek, with many viewers subsequently and correctly theorizing the unseen uncle to be that of Kingpin given his relationship with Echo in the comics as having taken her under his wing following the murder of her father. The rest of Kingpin and Echo’s story in the series can now be viewed completely as Hawkeye is now streaming in its entirety on Disney+.
