New Batgirl movie set photos reveal Black Canary Easter eggs in the background of Gotham City in the upcoming DC Extended Universe outing. The film is set to explore the origin story of Barbara Gordon, a Gotham City Police officer and daughter to GCPD Commissioner Jim Gordon, as she becomes the titular vigilante. Development on the film has been in the works for five years, with Joss Whedon originally attached to write and direct before departing shortly thereafter.
Leslie Grace is leading the cast of Batgirl as the titular heroine alongside J.K. Simmons returning as Commissioner Gordon, Brendan Fraser as the villainous Firefly and Jacob Scipio in an undisclosed role. The film will also see the return of Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, continuing his reprisal of the iconic DC Comics vigilante from fellow upcoming DCEU movie The Flash. With Bad Boys for Life duo Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directing a script penned by Birds of Prey‘s Christina Hodson, Batgirl began filming in Glasgow this past November and now an exciting new reveal has come from the set.
As production continues on the new DCEU film, Twitter user Best of Jurnee Smollett has shared new Batgirl movie set photos. The images reveal various background graffiti and artwork being designed for the streets of Gotham, including multiple posters promoting something for Black Canary. Check out the Black Canary Easter eggs below:
The Black Canary Easter eggs featured in the Batgirl movie set photos should come as an interesting tease of the DCEU connections the film has planned for audiences. With The Flash set to properly bring Keaton’s Batman into the Warner Bros. franchise and rumors of its retconning elements of the so-called Snyderverse, there’s been a lot of curiosity and speculation as to how Batgirl will handle its universe connections, namely as Simmons reprises Commissioner Gordon for the first time since either version of Justice League and Keaton is coming back. Now that the new photos also indicate references to Black Canary, who made her DCEU debut in Birds of Prey portrayed by Jurnee Smollett, it certainly looks to be keeping much of the past canon intact.
It’s also interesting to note that the Black Canary Easter eggs in the Batgirl movie set photos appear to feature the date November 11 in the corner of the posters. At the time of writing, the film currently has no set release date outside of sometime in 2022 on HBO Max, but while this date could be a hint towards when it arrives on the streaming service, it does seem highly unlikely given The Flash is set to hit theaters the week prior. In the meantime, audiences will have to keep their eyes peeled for more Batgirl movie set photos as production continues on the new DCEU chapter.
